AED 8000 Salary Gratuity in UAE (2026): Is It Worth Waiting for Year Five?
Most people at this salary level aren’t asking what gratuity is. They have an offer on the table, or they’re tired of the job, and they want to know one thing: does staying a bit longer actually pay?
Your AED 8000 salary gratuity is AED 28,000 at five years and AED 68,000 at ten. Below is what every year is worth, what crossing the five-year line really adds, and an honest answer to whether waiting is worth it.
Quick Answer
Daily wage: AED 8,000 ÷ 30 = AED 266.67
| Years of service | Gratuity | Added that year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | AED 5,600 | — |
| 2 years | AED 11,200 | +5,600 |
| 3 years | AED 16,800 | +5,600 |
| 4 years | AED 22,400 | +5,600 |
| 5 years | AED 28,000 | +5,600 |
| 6 years | AED 36,000 | +8,000 |
| 7 years | AED 44,000 | +8,000 |
| 8 years | AED 52,000 | +8,000 |
| 10 years | AED 68,000 | +8,000 |
| 15 years | AED 108,000 | +8,000 |
| 20 years | AED 148,000 | +8,000 |
Look at the right-hand column. Each of your first five years adds AED 5,600. From year six, each year adds AED 8,000 — a 43% jump in what your time is worth.
That’s the whole reason the five-year question matters.
What Crossing Five Years Actually Does — And What It Doesn’t
This is where most people get it wrong, and where several UAE gratuity guides get it wrong too.
The common belief: once you complete five years, all your years are recalculated at 30 days.
What actually happens: the 30-day rate applies only to years after the fifth. Your first five stay at 21 days permanently.
| If it were retroactive | What actually happens | |
|---|---|---|
| At 5 years | AED 40,000 | AED 28,000 |
| At 8 years | AED 64,000 | AED 52,000 |
| At 10 years | AED 80,000 | AED 68,000 |
A gap of AED 12,000 at every service length past five years. If you were counting on the higher figure, that’s the correction.
The upgrade is real, but it’s forward-looking only.

What One More Month Is Worth on AED 8,000
Since you’re weighing timing, here is the actual monthly value.
| Where you are | Each extra month adds |
|---|---|
| Anywhere in years 1–5 | AED 466.67 |
| Year 6 onwards | AED 666.67 |
Some specific points people ask about:
| Service | Gratuity |
|---|---|
| 4 years 6 months | AED 25,200 |
| 4 years 11 months | AED 27,533 |
| 5 years exactly | AED 28,000 |
| 5 years 1 month | AED 28,667 |
| 5 years 6 months | AED 32,000 |
| 6 years | AED 36,000 |
Going from 4 years 11 months to 5 years 1 month — two months of waiting — adds AED 1,133.
That is a real number, but it is probably smaller than you expected. Which brings us to the question you actually came here with.
Should You Wait? Do This Calculation First
Gratuity is only one side of the decision. If you have another offer, the salary difference usually matters more.
Worked example. You’re at 4 years 6 months on AED 8,000 basic. Another job offers AED 10,000 basic. You’re considering staying six months to reach the five-year mark.
| Amount | |
|---|---|
| Gratuity at 4 yrs 6 mo | AED 25,200 |
| Gratuity at 5 years | AED 28,000 |
| Gained by waiting | +AED 2,800 |
| Extra basic on the new job, 6 months | AED 12,000 |
| Lost by waiting | −AED 12,000 |
| Net position | AED 9,200 worse off |
Waiting costs you money here, and that stays true for most people in their first five years. The 21-day band simply isn’t worth much per month compared to a real salary increase.
When waiting does make sense:
- You’re past five years. Each month is now worth AED 666.67, and if the new offer isn’t much higher, staying can win
- The new offer is similar or lower. No raise to offset the gratuity you’re giving up
- You’re within a month or two of an anniversary. Small wait, whole month captured
- You’re under one year. This one is decisive — leaving at eleven months pays nothing at all. Twelve months pays AED 5,600
Run your own version of that table before you resign. It takes two minutes and it’s the only way to answer the question honestly.
Part Years Are Not Rounded Down
Every completed month counts in proportion after your first year.
| Service | Gratuity |
|---|---|
| 1 year 6 months | AED 8,400 |
| 2 years 3 months | AED 12,600 |
| 3 years 9 months | AED 21,000 |
| 4 years 8 months | AED 26,133 |
| 6 years 4 months | AED 38,667 |
| 7 years 9 months | AED 50,000 |
If your employer rounds you down to a whole year, that’s an error — 4 years 8 months rounded to 4 costs AED 3,733.
Three Things That Can Still Reduce the Payout
Unpaid leave
Days of unpaid absence come out of your service before the calculation runs.
On AED 8,000, each unpaid day costs AED 15.34 in years one to five, and AED 21.92 after that. A month of unpaid leave in year three is worth about AED 460.
Paid annual leave and paid sick leave don’t count against you.
Notice you don’t serve
Leaving without completing your notice period lets your employer deduct payment in lieu. On a one-month notice at AED 8,000 basic, that’s AED 8,000 off the settlement — considerably more than most people gain by timing their exit.
If you’re weighing dates, factor this in before the gratuity maths.
The ceiling
Total gratuity can’t exceed two years’ basic salary — AED 192,000 on AED 8,000, reached at about 25½ years. Below that it never applies.
Resigning Doesn’t Reduce Your AED 8000 Salary Gratuity
Worth saying plainly, because outdated advice still circulates.
Under the repealed Federal Law No. 8 of 1980, resigning early did cut your gratuity to a third or two thirds. That stopped applying in February 2022. Under Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, resignation and termination pay identically.
At seven years on AED 8,000, you receive AED 44,000 whether you quit or were let go.
Contract type makes no difference either — the limited versus unlimited distinction was removed with the same reform.
Is AED 8,000 Your Basic or Your Package?
Everything above assumes AED 8,000 is your basic salary.
If it’s your total package with, say, AED 5,000 basic and AED 3,000 in allowances, your five-year figure is AED 17,500, not AED 28,000.
Check the line in your MOHRE labour contract that says “basic salary.” Housing, transport, commission and overtime are all excluded. Where an offer letter and the registered contract disagree, the contract governs.
If your AED 8,000 turns out to be a package rather than a basic, our AED 6,000 breakdown covers the split in more detail.
DIFC and ADGM Employees
None of this applies to you.
DIFC replaced gratuity with DEWS in 2020 — your employer pays 5.83% of basic salary monthly for the first five years and 8.33% after, and you collect the accumulated fund. There is no five-year cliff to time your exit around.
ADGM runs its own approved savings schemes.
JAFZA, DMCC, DAFZA, Dubai South and the other free zones use the standard calculation on this page.
When You Should Be Paid
Within 14 days of your contract ending, under Article 53. Your gratuity is one line in the settlement, alongside unpaid salary, leave encashment, notice pay and any repatriation ticket your contract provides for.
Ask for it itemised before you sign anything.
Run Your Own Dates
The tables above use clean years. Yours won’t be clean.
Enter your actual joining date and the exit date you’re considering in the UAE Gratuity Calculator, then change the date and run it again. Comparing two specific dates is far more useful than a general rule.

AED 28,000 — 105 days of basic wage at AED 266.67 per day.
After 3 years?
AED 16,800.

AED 466.67 during your first five years, and AED 666.67 after that.
