AED 10000 salary gratuity in UAE showing AED 14,000 after 2 years, AED 35,000 after 5 years and AED 85,000 after 10 years

AED 10000 Salary Gratuity in UAE (2026): Why Yours Comes Out Lower Than Expected

Your AED 10000 salary gratuity is AED 35,000 after five years and AED 85,000 after ten — if AED 10,000 is your basic salary.
At this earning level, it usually isn’t. Packages of AED 10,000 are typically split with a modest basic and a large allowance component, and gratuity is built on the basic alone. That is why so many people at this salary open their settlement statement and find a number that looks nothing like what they’d calculated.
This guide gives you both sets of figures, and shows you how to find out which one is yours.

Quick Answer — If AED 10,000 Is Your Basic Salary

Daily wage: AED 10,000 ÷ 30 = AED 333.33

Years of serviceGratuity
1 yearAED 7,000
2 yearsAED 14,000
3 yearsAED 21,000
4 yearsAED 28,000
5 yearsAED 35,000
6 yearsAED 45,000
7 yearsAED 55,000
8 yearsAED 65,000
10 yearsAED 85,000
15 yearsAED 135,000
20 yearsAED 185,000

Each of your first five years adds AED 7,000. From year six, each year adds AED 10,000.

Resigning does not reduce any of these figures.

Why the Real Number Is Usually Smaller

At AED 10,000 a month, employers rarely make the whole amount basic. A typical structure looks like this:

ComponentAmount
Basic salaryAED 5,000
Housing allowanceAED 3,500
Transport allowanceAED 1,000
Other allowancesAED 500
Total packageAED 10,000

Gratuity is calculated on the AED 5,000 only. Housing, transport, commission, overtime and bonuses are all excluded under Article 51.

Here is what that does to your figure:

Basic salary5 years10 years
AED 10,000 (all basic)AED 35,000AED 85,000
AED 6,000 (60% basic)AED 21,000AED 51,000
AED 5,000 (50% basic)AED 17,500AED 42,500
AED 4,000 (40% basic)AED 14,000AED 34,000

At ten years, the gap between the top and bottom row is AED 51,000. Same monthly income. Same decade of work.

Why Employers Structure It This Way

It is worth understanding, because it explains why negotiating this at offer stage matters far more than arguing about it at exit.

A lower basic reduces the employer’s accruing liability. Gratuity, leave encashment and notice pay are all calculated on basic salary, so a company paying AED 10,000 with AED 4,000 basic carries a much smaller obligation than one paying AED 10,000 with AED 8,000 basic.

None of this is unlawful. Employers are free to structure a package as they choose, and there is no statutory minimum ratio of basic to allowances.

Which means the time to raise it is when you accept an offer, not when you resign. If two offers are the same headline figure, the one with the higher basic is worth meaningfully more over several years.

Find Your Basic Salary in Two Minutes

1. Your MOHRE labour contract. This is the document that governs. It shows basic salary on its own line, separate from allowances. View it through the MOHRE app or ask HR for a copy.

2. Your payslip. Most UAE payslips itemise the split. If yours shows one lump figure, ask HR for an itemised version.

3. Your offer letter. Treat this as secondary. Offer letters and registered contracts sometimes disagree, and the registered contract governs.

Once you have the basic, the calculation is simply: basic ÷ 30 × 21 × years, with 30 days per year replacing 21 after your fifth year.

One more thing worth checking: if your contract has been renewed, make sure they’re counting from your original joining date and not the renewal.

Worked Example — AED 5,000 Basic on an AED 10,000 Package

This is the most common real-world case at this salary level.

Seven years of service:

  • Daily wage: 5,000 ÷ 30 = AED 166.67
  • First 5 years: 105 days × 166.67 = AED 17,500
  • Years 6–7: 2 × 5,000 = AED 10,000
  • Total: AED 27,500

If you had assumed your gratuity ran on the full AED 10,000, you would have expected AED 55,000. The gap is AED 27,500 — exactly half.

Part Years Count in Proportion

Nothing is rounded down after your first year. On a full AED 10,000 basic:

ServiceGratuity
1 year 6 monthsAED 10,500
2 years 3 monthsAED 15,750
3 years 9 monthsAED 26,250
4 years 8 monthsAED 32,667
5 years 6 monthsAED 40,000
7 years 4 monthsAED 58,333

Below twelve months, nothing is payable.

If You’re Moving Between DIFC and the Mainland

At this salary level a lot of moves are into or out of DIFC, and the systems are completely different.

DIFC replaced gratuity with DEWS in 2020. Your employer pays monthly into a funded plan — 5.83% of basic salary for the first five years and 8.33% after that — and you receive the accumulated contributions plus investment returns.

Two things worth knowing before you move:

Your mainland service does not transfer. Moving from a mainland employer to a DIFC one ends your mainland service and triggers your gratuity settlement. The DEWS clock starts fresh.

DEWS pays monthly, so you never have a five-year cliff. With mainland gratuity, leaving at four years and eleven months means every year sits at the 21-day rate. Under DEWS, contributions accrue evenly from month one.

ADGM operates its own regulations and permits approved savings schemes.

JAFZA, DMCC, DAFZA, Dubai South and the other free zones follow the standard mainland calculation.

What Else Can Reduce Your Payout

Unpaid leave. Days of unpaid absence come out of your service before the calculation. On a full AED 10,000 basic, each unpaid day costs AED 19.18 in years one to five and AED 27.40 after that.

Notice you don’t serve. Your employer may deduct payment in lieu. On a one-month notice at AED 10,000 basic, that is AED 10,000 off the settlement.

The ceiling. Total gratuity cannot exceed two years’ basic salary — AED 240,000 on a full AED 10,000 basic, reached at about 25½ years.

Resigning Doesn’t Cost You Anything

Under the repealed Federal Law No. 8 of 1980, resigning early did reduce your gratuity. That stopped applying in February 2022.

Under Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, resignation and termination pay identically. Contract type makes no difference either — the limited versus unlimited distinction was removed in the same reform.

At seven years on a full AED 10,000 basic, you receive AED 55,000 whether you quit or were let go.

When You Should Be Paid

Within 14 days of your contract ending, under Article 53.

Your gratuity is one line in a larger settlement, alongside unpaid salary, leave encashment, notice pay and any repatriation ticket your contract provides for. Ask for it itemised before you sign.

Run Your Own Numbers

Take the basic salary from your MOHRE contract — not your package — and enter your actual dates in the UAE Gratuity Calculator. You’ll get a year-by-year breakdown you can print and take into your settlement meeting.

FAQS

How much gratuity on AED 10,000 after 5 years?

AED 35,000 if AED 10,000 is your basic salary. On a typical package where basic is AED 5,000, it is AED 17,500.

How much after 10 years?

AED 85,000 on a full basic, or AED 42,500 where basic is half the package.

Why is my gratuity so much lower than I calculated?

Almost always because the calculation ran on your basic salary rather than your total package. At AED 10,000, basic is often only 40 to 60 percent of the package.

Is it legal for my employer to set a low basic salary?

Yes. There is no statutory minimum ratio of basic to allowances. It is worth negotiating at offer stage rather than at exit.

Which document decides my basic salary?

The labour contract registered with MOHRE. Where an offer letter disagrees, the registered contract governs.

Does resigning reduce it?

No. Resignation and termination pay the same under the current law.

What happens to my gratuity if I move to DIFC?

Your mainland service ends and your gratuity is settled at that point. DIFC uses DEWS, a monthly contribution scheme, and your service starts fresh there.

Do part years count?

Yes, in proportion. Nothing is rounded down after your first year.

Is there a maximum?

Two years’ basic salary — AED 240,000 on a full AED 10,000 basic.

Is gratuity taxable in the UAE?

No.
